Calmly ask for some form of ID, if they cannot show you anything.....walk away.
The police in the UK have the right to stop anyone they suspect to be involved in/planning a crime. You're right to be polite and it can be a bit daunting to have four men jump out of a car, that's the idea, they want to gain an advantage over you from the start so you comply to their request, whatever that may be.
Ask for their ID and if they refuse take note of their car number and go to the police.
Id let them and tell them they will not find any thing and not to take any thing, or leave anything.
If this happens again quickly call 911 asking if the have any officers on the street at where your at. The dispatcher should know this information. If they tell you there are no officers on that street ask the men for ID. All police carry their badge and department ID on them at all times even when in plain clothes. Write down names and badge numbers and call the non-emergency number and ask if these officers work for the department. If the men arn't on the department or have offical ID refuse to stop for them and walk away. And let the dispatcher know you did this. That way if they do call you in as leaving the scene you have your butt covered.
